Michael Harre Mrs.Kerr English 8 4/3/2011 Olympics Essay
The Olympics are a very exciting event that many families all across the world watch. They have been known to unite the world even if only for a few weeks. Few events bring the same excitement as the Olympics do and none can beat it because it has a rich history and because it includes ice hockey. First, the Olympics were ended for a certain period of time so when they returned it was different than the first Olympics and was addressed as the Modern Olympics. The year they returned was 1896 and it was held in Athens, Greece (Haydn, 4). Olympics include many events in categories such as aquatics, gymnastics, tennis, weight lifting and running (Oxlade, Ballheimer 22-25). In the first Modern Olympics only the first and second place contestants received an award for their event. The first contestants were mainly Greeks but anybody could join so some tourists also joined. Winter sports were not a part of the Olympics at that time (Oxlade, Ballheimer15). The Olympics were brought back by a French-man named Barron Pierre who in 1884 put forth a resolution to bring back the Olympics. Without Barron Pierre it is possible we would not have the Olympics today. Second, ice hockey is many people’s favorite event in the Winter Olympics. It is their favorite sport because it has hard hitting, is exciting, and is fast paced. America’s top competitors are Canada and Russia factoring in the perfect conditions and the amount of talent that comes out of both places. Canada is the favorite to win the Gold Medal in the next Winter Olympics but America’s chance of being in the top three is high. Canada also holds the current record for this event (Pro ice hockey). America practices in Colorado Springs, Colorado (ice/news). Hockey has always been a source of strength for America and many people hope it stays that way. In Conclusion, The Olympics have been a great thing for the world and will most likely continue to be. They have been source of peace and pride for many countries .Many people believe the Olympics will continue to flourish because it is historical, and because it has the fast moving sport of hockey.
